Canterbury's top Paper Tiger sailors performed well in the National Championships in Nelson last week, with two sailors finishing in the top ten and eligible for the Internationals in Australia. More impressively, they both took out the final race with John Kennett first (fourth overall) and Glen McKenzie second (ninth overall).
This was Glen's first national contest since graduating from Zephyrs and his second placing followed damage to his rudders and a DNF in the penultimate race. John found his hulls sloshing with water after the win but it obviously didn't slow him down. Both sailors put a lot of effort into preparation for the regatta.
The Championships were dominated by Bob Preston from Nelson Yacht Club who won the first four races and could discard a DNF in the final race. The regatta was mainly held in moderate sea breezes but large waves in races five and six caused 11 boats to pull out.
The rest of the Canterbury fleet were scattered amongst a fleet of 46 competitive boats, with all but Bob Preston travelling to the event. A key learning from the regatta was how to sail in large waves, which Canterbury sailors rarely experience.
