This is the page for the MPYC Paper Tiger Fleet.

There is an active Paper Tiger fleet in Canterbury with a website at http://canterburypapertiger.yolasite.com  We try to make sure that the fleet congregates at the one event, so we sail on the Estuary, Pigeon Bay, Charteris Bay and Naval Point.

The class association website is http://www.papertiger.org.nz/, and Glen McKenzie is the Central South Island rep.

2009 Paper Tiger Internationals - our man does good!

John placed 6th overall and first NZ boat in the Champs.  The series was cut to 7 races instead of 9 due to light winds throughout.

What makes this result exceptional (and a little disappointing) is an OCS in the first race, which he was winning.  He followed this with 2, 3, 3 before an 18 and 13.  That was not unusual though as the top boats all had ups and downs.  A final 3rd place cemented his position on 42 points, 5 points clear of his next rival.

The winner was Ben Deed on 29 points. Names in front were Marcovitch, Williams, Anderson - a bit of PT who's who.  Glenn Syman was the next NZer at 11th.

Just to make clear what John has achieved:

  • in seven races he registered four placings in the top 3, and would have had five without the OCS.  No-one else scored more than two top 3 placings
  • if he hadn't been OCS and had instead come 4th in the first race he would have won the series
Having said that, OCS is OCS.  But the wee guy has some potential!

More impressively, they both took out the final race with John Kennett first (fourth overall) and Glen McKenzie second (ninth overall).
