Learn to Sail
PDF Print E-mail

The Club is a great place to learn to sail with sheltered waters, experienced coaches and excellent facilities including hot showers. Parents are welcome to attend and watch as coaching takes place close to the Clubhouse. Make better use of your time and spare your kids some embarrassment by helping out on the support boats, in the canteen or even join an adult learn to sail class yourself!

For all courses, boats and life-jackets are provided, although you can bring your own. Lifejackets must be up to YNZ standards. Expect to take a swim now and then, so wear warm clothes or wetsuit and bring soap, towel and change of clothes. Footwear, such as old sandshoes, is essential for protection against shells, glass and yacht fittings - jandals float off so don't wear those. You will need sunblock.

If the weather foils our attempts to get on the water, we will train indoors. Bring your sailing gear regardless of what the weather looks like at home.

Junior Learn to Sail

Welcome to the Learn to Sail programme for the 2012-2013 season, which starts Friday October 19th. The price this year, for the whole season through to April 2013, is $180.00 payable at time of enrolment.

The courses use our club Optimists, so you don't have to buy a boat yet.  There is plenty of parking off-street.  Sailors earn a Yachting New Zealand Level 1 Certificate, followed by a Level 2.

Numbers are limited and the courses are usually filled early, so book soon.

Please contact Keith Hay ph 322 7067 or e-mail   This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it if you want further information or want to apply to take part.

We start the first weekend with an introduction on the Friday evening.  From then on we sail and have fun.

As instruction is provided by volunteers, we do need help from parents. Parents will be expected to help with rigging and de-rigging optimists. Instruction will be given to parents for this.

Parents will be expected to help with running a rescue boat, especially at the start of the course. Life jackets are available.

Parents will be expected to help with organising boats and sailors at waters edge and in the water.

Other ways to learn

Other options to learn to sail or to join in include:

  • crew on a Sunburst - contact the Sunburst class rep or enquire at the Club - crews are often needed
  • if you have a boat already, contact the class rep. Fleets are friendly and not as competitive when sailing on the Estuary and generally happy to get you pointed in the right direction and help if you get into trouble.

Adult Sailing Lessons 2012/13 Season

The program will take participants to LEVEL 1 of the Yachting New Zealand National Sailing Scheme.

The lessons will normally be held in sunburst or piccolo dinghies or your own yacht. There will be theory and practical both on and off water.

Because of the nature of the sport weather conditions can change and be unsuitable. Also facilities in the form of suitable boats and instructors may also not be available. MPYC make no guarantees as to availability of facilities on any particular day. The decision to sail is with the Officer of the Day and with the Instructor.

To enrol in the course you will need to pay the course fee of $200 at the time of enrolling.

What to Bring

You are required to bring warm clothes. We suggest woollen or polyprop gear, a windbreaker, suitable footwear, hat, a change of clothes (especially underwear or swimming togs), and a towel. Bring a wet suit and buoyancy aid if you have them.

You are welcome to have a shower after the lesson and refreshments in the clubhouse after on the water session. The course also includes rigging and de rigging the boats and debriefing so please allow time for this.

When to arrive

Please arrive at the stated time, as it is necessary to cover some theory as well as rig the yacht so that you get the most out of each lesson. At some stage you will be watching other course members for an hour while they are out in the yacht. If you are not prepared to wait around then please do not enrol for the course as you will be stopping someone else doing the course.

Format of the Course

There will be some theory before going on the water and on some days also afterwards depending on tide times. There will normally be about two hours sailing each day with two participants in the sunburst at a time or one person in the piccolos. This should give each participant about an hour on the tiller.

The course will cover 4 lessons normally on different days plus one day testing. Each lesson will be about 5hrs.
